A great day tangling with friends

Yesterday, 3 of my CZT friends, Carolyn Russell and Sindy Levine, (Adele Bruno couldn't make it) from the Longwood/ Altamonte Springs area and Tracey Lyon from the Daytona area, joined me to take a class from fellow CZT, Dorian Eng in Jacksonville, FL.  We had a great time.

First, Dorian taught us how to make a Zendala string using a template slightly smaller than the Zendala tile, then led us through the tangling steps.  Thanks, Dorian, I learned a lot.
Then, Dorian taught us how to make her famous pillow box out of Zendala tiles.  It stays together without glue.  So cool.

Before we got together, Dorian divided a Zendala tile into 6 sections and we rotated it among us, each tangling one section.  Her husband, Doug, photographed the finished tile and she made copies to give everyone in the class.  Here it is.
We had a great time and plan to get together with as many CZTs from Florida as possible to spend time tangling in the near future.

Look for more info!

The evolution of C-RCHN

During certain times of the year, I will find sea urchins on the beach. Mostly they are crushed or in pieces. But, on occasion, I find whole urchin shells. Amazingly, I will find tiny urchin shells intact amongst several broken shells that are much thicker and sturdier.

Inspired by the beauty and tenacity of these delicate shells, I created a tangle called C-RCHN. Here it is.

Notice how the tangle progresses.
First, a picture of the sea urchin that inspired this tangle:

I started out with this

Then, the tangle evolved into this

Which morphed into this:

Here are some examples of using C-RCHN in art work.

---The World

I went to an art association meeting the other night and this was the first slide of the speaker’s presentation.  Good way to prime the audience.

Zentangle Inspired Art

I love to tangle.  I do it on a daily basis.  It is a great companion when watching (listening) to TV (especially when football is on).
I love everything about the ocean, sea life, beach, breeze…..
So, it was a natural progression going from 31/2” square tiles to Sea life ZIA.

Well, let me back up. I started by drawing patterns in a Seahorse shape before I knew anything about Zentangle.  Then, after learning about Zentangle and drawing tiles, I once again tackled a tangled sea horse.

This painting is a little larger than 16x20.  I used watercolors along with the pen and ink.

I enjoyed doing this so much, I did another.  This time though, I used just the pen and ink.  I had the image burned into a silk screen and printed it on a piece of stained glass.  The paint is fired into the glass and won't every come off.  I am using this piece, as well as 4 other ZIA of sea life in a stained glass window.   I will post it when done.

Basic Zentangle Classes

Zentangle® is a fun, relaxing, and easy-to-learn method for drawing beautiful patterned designs. Kids and adults, beginners and professional artists alike from all over the world enjoy "tangling" . In the basic class, students will learn the steps of the Zentangle process and related vocabulary. We will have fun exploring 3-4 patterns and complete a traditional Zentangle tile.  Materials will be provided for class with additional supplies to use at home. In the Beyond the Basics class, Zentangle-Inspired Art (ZIA) will be discussed as welll as traditional Zentangle.  Instructor Joan Delony is a retired professional educator and a Certified Zentangle Teacher™ (CZT).

It's a String Thing #58

#58 included the tangles: Girdy, Gothic, Gingham, and Girlandi.

The only tangle I had drawn is Girdy. This challenge was the inagurations of using the other 3 tangles.

Only 3 patterns ended up in my tile: Girdy, Gothic, and Girlandi  Then I blessed the tile with a little Bronx Cheer. I had a few lines in Gothic take off like a shadow in the night.

I can't say this is one of my favorite tiles, but I really enjoyed the challenge of using new tangles and trying to fit them together in the string line we were given.
Here is my work for this week:

It is interesting to look at the tiles from 2 different perspectives --

I think.

"In the Meadow"

Shortly after returning from CZT training, I was playing around with a new tangle by CZT Molly Hollibaugh called "ING". I started this drawing with ING (blue and lavender tangle in the center) and just kept tangling. I included the fun tangle "Kornels"created by my friend and fellow CZT, patsy monk. (it is colored yellow). Then I added some "Munchin" by Molly Hollibaugh, a little "Ripples" by Sandy Bartholomew, Fescu, Crescent Moon, Echoism, and Tipple by Zentangle founders Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas. When I finished the drawing, it reminded me of a meadow of wild flowers and ponds. Every meadow is full of color, so I complied.

Afternoon of Delight

Yesterday, I had the privilege of spending the afternoon with Joanne Fink, the founder of Zenpirations, and four of my good friends and fellow CZTs.  Joanne demonstrated the use of broad tip and pointed tip letter art using both nibs and ink as well as Koi markers.  We all got to try our hand at it as well.  What fun! And, what an inspiration Joanne is.

Joanne also shared with us a special project she is working on -- soon to be released.  Stay tuned to Seazening to learn more about it. Personally, I can't wait until she kicks it off.
Thank you Joanne for a delightful afternoon.
